Requests in contemporary Bulgarian: Are they more polite in indirect form?

The present paper proposes a hypothesis about the relation between politeness and indirect requests in modern Bulgarian. It provides an overview of linguistic models of the request as a speech act and of concepts on direct/indirect politeness. The linguistics means of expressing direct and indirect request in modern Bulgarian are described in detail and assessed according to the degree of politeness that they express.
