Names of Plants in the Book of the Prophet Daniel

The article examines the available lexemes in the field of botany and their derivates in the Old Testament Book of Prophet Daniel, including its deuterocanonical parts. Parallels among Aramaic, Biblical Greek, Latin and Old Church Slavonic translations, are brought to bear, where possible, in order to outline a complete picture. It turns out that the choice of names of specific plants and parts of them is far from unambiguous and they do not correspond to present-day names of the plants and their parts, as can be seen in comparison with the modern translation of the Old Testament.

Key words: botany, translations, Old Church Slavonic, Book of Prophet Daniel, Biblical Greek.
