An attempt was made in a recent publication to ascribe to the late Bulgarian linguist Yordan Penchev the idea that imperfect participles are not used in the perfect. In his publication Penchev not only rejects it, he actually supports exactly the opposite: imperfect participles are used to form perfects. It was previously thought that only four “dissidents” consider verb forms such as четял е to be perfects. With Penchev added to them, now they are five, but this is still rather insufficient for Bulgarian studies, where the blatantly wrong opposite thesis continues to be prevalent.
