Abstract. The paper analyses the frequency of selected proper names in corpus texts of mainly media character. According to data from the Czech National Corpus, the official forms of the proper names Jiří, Jan, Ivan and Petr (Jiří, Jan, Ivan and Petr ) are used most frequently in journalism and fiction. In contrast, the hyponyms Jiřík, Honza and Petya (Jiřík, Honza and Petya) are very common in colloquial speech, fiction and sometimes in journalism. Some hippocoristics are very often associated with a particular fairy tale character, such as the foolish Honza or Ivanushka the fool. On the other hand, formal forms of masculine proper names are often associated with biblical or historical figures, such as St. Peter, Jan Hus, King Jiri of Podebrady, Ivan the Terrible, etc.
Key words: proper names, masculine names, hippocoristics, corporeal study.
