Abstract. The object of the study are narrative texts produced and written down by a child between the ages of 6 and 7. Children’s stories present a series of interconnected adventures of a group of characters. In order to trace the progression in child’s mastery of the text-linguistic structure, two of the texts, created at the ages of six and seven, respectively, were analyzed. The results showed that the stories were written in compliance with the requirements for coherence and cohesion, following the model: setting, characters and plot, conflict, climax, and resolution. The stories have a genre specificity, a clearly expressed theme, interesting plot twists; the characters have stable features, the narrative point of view is consistently developed. The analysis of some basic text-linguistic markers in the compared texts gave grounds for the statement that there were no fundamental differences between the child’s skills in creating a short narrative in the two age periods. However, some trends emerged that reflected a shift in narrative strategies, which, albeit indirectly, could be attributed to increased narrative competence.
